Essays

Ramona Murray
Ramona Murray lives in Barbados and has worked for many years as a janitorial assistant at the Barbados Community College. She works hard to support her family and ensure their education is of the best possible level.

In January 2008, Ramona read a poster on the student notice board inviting applications from anyone interested in making the hospitality business their business by growing their personal skills and knowledge through education and training. The poster was from the CHA Education Foundation and Ramona says ‘it changed my life’.

Ramona has always wanted to elevate herself and become a dynamic member of the industry, ideally at supervisory level, but never had the opportunity to spend time and money on herself as supporting her family came first.

Ramona applied to the Barbados Community College for their Hospitality Studies Associates Degree program, reasoning ‘it’ll give me a really good idea of how each element of a hotel operates and what is expected’. She was accepted but could not move forward without the tuition being paid.

Ramona applied to CHAEF and the selectors were really impressed with her determination, her belief that ‘now was her time’ and the years of hard work she’d given to allow her family a better chance than she’d had. It was a pleasure to award her a tuition scholarship and write the congratulatory letter.

Ramona says “CHAEF has given me a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am so excited and keen to begin my studies. I am ready to show people that it’s never to late to improve yourself, your knowledge and your ability to advance.”
